Hayriye Mehmet has a wealth of experience in the education sector, having worked in both Further Education and Higher Education. With a Master’s degree in Careers Guidance and Counselling and a strong background in careers advice, Hayriye brings an abundance of knowledge to London Met as Director of Student Journey.
“I started off as a Careers Advisor working with young people in schools from age 14-16 which I really enjoyed” she said. “But then I decided I wanted to gain experience working with adults. I really enjoyed working in the education setting and with the 16+ age group and applied for a specialist role, as a Higher Education Careers Adviser, advising students on applying to Higher Education.”
Working as a Careers Advisor for a large Further Education college, Hayriye quickly gained lots of skills in providing counsel and advice in relation to welfare and finance. It wasn’t long before her skills took her to the next level, progressing her to a more challenging role as a Student Services Manager.
“Working as a Student Services Manager for three years, I developed new skills and experience leading a team with a broad portfolio within student Services, which was a really good experience,” she says. “I learned a lot during my time there.”
Having become an expert in Student Services, Hayriye took on more responsibility working as the Head of Student Services at a large west London College before finally joining London Metropolitan University.
“My management career progressed quite quickly, due to the hard work and commitment I invested in the teams I was managing; demonstrating the value added and the impact of Student Services was having on the student experience.”
Hayriye’s hard work has led her to achieving a significant amount in her career, including achieving 89.4% of graduates being employed or engaged in further study within six months of completing their course, which is the highest E1a indicator achieved at London Met.
“My proudest achievement during my career whilst working at London Met has been working with my team to successfully increase the DLHE survey results for two consecutive years. I am also proud of the external accreditations the department have achieved in recent years.”
Hayriye is now responsible for the student experience from ‘application to graduation’ and intends to create an excellent customer and student experience for students at London Met.
“My aim is to create a department that provides and delivers an excellent customer-focused student journey, developing an operation for excellent systems, processes and quality assurance across all aspects of the student journey. The customers will experience a high quality Information, Advice & Guidance, that will enhance the student experience.”
Hayriye cares deeply about the impact of London Met on student lives and she enjoys the diversity that London Met brings.
“I enjoy the challenge, and the range of experiences London Met provides, supporting students from diverse backgrounds, and developing their educational career and supporting them with a range of non-curricular opportunities underpinned by good quality professional services provision.
When Hayriye has time outside of work, she enjoys spending it with her family.
“I enjoy spending time with my family, going on holiday and travelling. I like experiencing new countries, cultures, different ways of living, new foods and new environments.”
