Our careers service coordinates internship placements for our study abroad students. Please note there is a fee for this service (currently £700).
If you are intending to undertake an internship or take part in volunteering you must have a Tier 4 visa. Please take a look at our visa information for further details.
We expect you to count the internship as one of your four modules of study, as most students are working towards internship credit at their home university. You are expected to complete one day each week at your internship and therefore undertaking this as a fifth module would be a difficult commitment.
A careers officer will spend a great deal of time searching for a suitable placement so please be certain you want to do an internship before making your application. Please also be realistic in your expectations; it is extremely difficult to secure internships at high-profile organisations.
The deadlines for internship applications are:
Autumn: 1 June
Spring: 15 October
Details of the programme
This programme is available only to students participating in the Study Abroad Programme. It is coordinated by the Careers and Employability Service and provides an opportunity to complete a part-time voluntary internship in addition to your studies.
- The programme has been developed to help you gain the type of skills and real life experiences employers say they want from college graduates.
- We will help you to find an internship related to your course. Bear in mind that whilst we make every effort to find an opportunity in your chosen field, you do have to be realistic and flexible. Although the Careers and Employability Service has a high success rate in placing study abroad students, we cannot guarantee to find an internship for every student.
- We will also support you whilst you are completing the internship and will assist you in fulfilling your home college requirements for internship credit.
Where study abroad students intern will give you ideas on where past students have been placed whilst the Code of Conduct for US Study Abroad Interns and the Rights and Responsibilities of US Interns will help you to understand what is expected of you and what you can expect from others. You will also need to view and complete the Study Abroad Internship Agreement and Study Abroad Student Health and Safety Checklist.
