This Sports Therapy MSci degree is a postgraduate qualification that combines bachelor’s and master's levels of study. The course places an emphasis on work-based learning, with an opportunity to complete a year-long placement.
On completion of this four-year course you’ll be eligible for membership of the Society of Sports Therapists (SST), which gives you licence to work as a sports therapist. This, coupled with the level of expertise you gain in class and at your placement, will make you attractive to potential employers in the industry.
Our MSci course will develop your understanding of sports injuries and therapy, as well as the ability to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate sports injuries. Throughout the course we will focus on equipping you with practical skills such as patient handling and decision making in a sports therapy setting.
Your first year will focus on providing you with the fundamental knowledge of human anatomy, human physiology and sports research skills vital for higher level of study in this field. In the subsequent years you’ll have the opportunity to choose modules that interest you, allowing you to specialise in specific fields such as advanced biomechanics, practical delivery in coaching and teaching or clinical exercise physiology.
The course is designed to allow you to take advantage of a year-long placement at a stage when you have the skills and experience of a bachelor’s graduate. This means that you’ll be able to do more in your placement (and for longer) compared to students taking standard sports therapy placements. This will provide you with an advantage over sports therapy graduates from more traditional courses when seeking employment.
You will be assessed via a range of methods including essays, presentations, log books, work experience and examinations.
During your final year, you will complete a placement that will be assessed by a portfolio of your work and case studies. You will also write a thesis and take a viva.
On graduation you will be eligible for a membership of the Society of Sports Therapists.

Year 1 modules include:
This module is intended to serve as an introduction to Sports Therapy. It covers the core theoretical and practical competencies of a Sports Therapist including; first aid, application of effective sports massage and the fundamentals of a clinical examination and assessment.
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s Framework for Higher Educations Qualifications. This module aims to provide an introduction to human anatomy and biomechanics. The module has a bias towards the specific interests of those studying for sports-related degrees. Thus, the principal focus in anatomy is the musculoskeletal system, together with movement analysis and the isolation of specific muscle groups. In biomechanics, the focus is on the basic anthropometry and kinematics of the human body.
This module provides an introduction to exercise related physiology, the sub-discipline of sport and exercise science. This is accompanied by the principles of training and athletic preparation which ensures a bias towards the specific interests of those studying for sports-related degrees.

This module aims to provide students with a fundamental grounding in exercise physiology. Students are made familiar with physiology, biochemistry and cell biology.
The module encourages an appreciation of the contribution of Physiological Science to sports performance and exercise delivering both theory (the muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems) and practical skills (scientific methods of testing and data collection).
The knowledge gained is relevant for a variety of employment opportunities, particularly those within sports science, coaching, personal training and sports therapy.
This module is intended to introduce students to the study of sport in higher education at London Metropolitan University as well as developing life-long skills in organisation and application of knowledge. In addition, the module introduces students to methods of data analysis using computer software.
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. The module aims to introduce students to the learning resources within the University to assist them with their personal and professional development. Students will enhance their planning, preparation, academic writing styles, referencing, resourcing and development for academia to enable an easy transition between levels. With regard to data analysis the aim of the module is to enable students to apply statistical techniques to data, as part of their other studies as well as in a more general work environment.
Year 2 modules include:
This module is focused upon the safe and effective clinical examination and assessment (E&A) of the peripheral anatomical region of the body and the clinical significance of these E&A findings. The module also develops the students’ understanding of the theory which underpins these practical elements including knowledge of common injuries and the underlying pathophysiology.
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s, Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. This module aims to provide the students with the knowledge, understanding and ability to safely and effectively conduct a thorough examination and assessment of a peripheral joint. To link theory with practise, this module will also discuss common injuries and the use of the assessment protocol to identify these injuries whilst considering the epidemiology, aetiology and pathology.
The knowledge obtained through completion of this module provides the students with essential skills which are key competencies for their future employment as a Sport Therapist. They will also gain key fundamental skills such as communication, personal responsibility and decision making, which are transferable to a wide range of employments.
This module introduces students to the responses of tissues and organs to acute and chronic exercise training. Students are also familiarised with a variety of field and laboratory-based tests of physical performance to assess components of fitness and work capacity

The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s, Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. Students will gain the understanding, knowledge and expertise to apply safe and effective manual therapy to the peripheral joints by introducing the students to the concepts and current philosophies of manual therapy techniques. The application of manual therapy techniques will be based on the clinical interpretation of case notes.
The module also aims to develop the ability to clinically interpret athlete information, formulate clinical decisions to develop a treatment program based on knowledge of common sporting/dancing injuries, their mechanics and their sporting demands. The knowledge obtained through completion of this module provides the students with essential skills which are key competencies for their future employment as a Sport Therapist. They will also gain key fundamental skills such as communication, personal responsibility and decision making, which are transferable to a wide range of employments.
This module develops students’ ability to research, plan, provide and justify an appropriate rehabilitation programme for the early, intermediate, late and pre-discharge stages of sports injuries. This module serves the BSc Sports Therapy pathway only.
Aims of the module:
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s, Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. More specifically, it aims to provide students with academic knowledge and understanding to plan a safe and effective rehabilitation programme suitable for the initial response, acute, sub-acute and remodelling stages of injury healing.
Students will develop critical analysis skills in an oral context and develop awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses in a rehabilitation setting. Students will gain the underpinning knowledge and practical ability to screen for injuries, interpret the findings and implement a pre-habilitation programme to help reduce the risk of injury. Students will be able to plan, implement and deliver rehabilitation and remedial programmes suitable for the early, intermediate, late and pre-discharge stages of any common sports injury.
The module also seeks to develop competence in discussion and oral presentation encouraging clarity of presentation and scientific rigour, transferable tools often used in many employment settings and which will facilitate progression to higher level modules.
ST5060; Sports Science Research Methods; Spring teaching period. It is expected that students will have successfully completed Level 4 as a module pre-requisite.
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s Framework for Higher Educations Qualifications. This module aims to allow students to reflect on their chosen course. Students will select their project within the context of the course and possible future career. Students will consider and carry out the preparation necessary for a scientific dissertation proposal. In so doing, students will gain experience in devising dissertations by taking into account experimental design, feasibility in terms of costs and resources, and aspects of ethics and safety.
This module focuses on understanding the principles of human movement in terms of anatomy and biomechanics. In addition the module provides examples of the application of this knowledge to performance analysis, the development of sporting excellence, and injury prevention. A practical programme explores in more detail topics covered in the lectures.
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. This module aims to: provide an understanding of human movement and its control in terms of biomechanical and anatomical principles; illustrate how this knowledge may be applied to the analysis and development of human performance, and the prevention and treatment of injuries; and, develop critical thinking skills of data analysis and interpretation of results. These aims have been aligned with the qualification descriptors published by the Quality Assurance Agency’s Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.
This module explores the key pedagogical theories that inform sports coaching and teaching as well as covering a wide variety of themes relevant to contemporary sports education and training. The module includes a strong emphasis on experiential learning with students engaging in practical coaching and teaching sessions on a weekly basis.
The module aims to provide students with an overarching appreciation of important theories relating to effective teaching and coaching practice. Students are afforded various opportunities to develop their practical competencies in relation to teaching and coaching. Ultimately, the module seeks to develop responsible and effective practitioners with a firm grounding in the necessary interpersonal and decision-making skills required within the coaching/teaching profession. The ability to communicate and use a variety of strategies to achieve coaching/teaching objectives is developed, along with an appreciation of the value of reflective practice in personal development.

This module elaborates on the key theories in sport psychology, covering a wide range of sport psychology topics and the mental skills used within those topics. Psychological issues relating to individual behaviour patterns are favoured are studied in detail. The impact of psychological factors on both participation and performance are studied.
The module aims to provide students with an understanding of key psychological theories which underpin sporting performance and participation itself. Students will focus on the psychological factors which influence an individual’s sporting behaviour, whether it be in competition, training or general participation. The module aims to develop students’ communication and literacy skills to allow them the ability to write a scientific piece of work with confidence. Most mental skills developed in sport psychology are directly transferable therefore students are given qualities necessary to advance in many other areas of life.

Year 3 modules include:
This module allows students to integrate their knowledge gained throughout their degree and combines this with new skills and knowledge developed within their final year.
The module focuses on vertebral mobilisations and the theoretical and practical knowledge of electrotherapeutic modalities.

This module is an introduction to the principles of business in the specific context of health science related ventures. The module is worth 15 credits and will run during the Spring.
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s, Framework for Higher Education Qualifications. More specifically, it aims to provide students with academic knowledge and understanding to implement good business practice including marketing, accounting, management, service and reflection. These topics should provide the underpinning information to allow students to harness an entrepreneurial approach to business and professional work to optimise their employability and performance.
The module also seeks to develop competence in discussion, oral presentation and written work, encouraging clarity of presentation and transferable tools often used in many employment settings.
The module is designed to provide students with an understanding of the skills needed for planning, organisation and practice of research in health sciences.
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
- utilise available resources effectively – ability to work autonomously, find and use learning resources, manage time effectively, use computer based skills (word processing, mathematical, statistical, referencing, presentation);
- apply advanced statistical hypothesis testing tools;
- manage the project process – from proposal to publication;
- work collaboratively with others – building inter-disciplinary relationships;
- be a morally responsible researcher – an appreciation of the wider academic community and the ability to take an ethically sound stance when considering the potential impact of research on others; and
- communicate effectively – being able to communicate knowledge both orally and in a visual format, to demonstrate interactive and group skills; to write in a scientific manner and designated format; to demonstrate written and statistical literacies appropriate to sub-discipline.
This module will enable students to reinforce the skills necessary to carry out a scientific programme requiring significant research. It will allow students to demonstrate the final development of their subject knowledge, skills and understanding through extended research based on laboratory, literature or field work. This research will lead to the presentation of a detailed written report.
The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s Framework for Higher Educations Qualifications. This module aims to encourage students to reflect and build upon their subject knowledge and expertise by means of a specific investigation requiring significant research. During the course of the module they will develop the skills necessary to plan, carry out, analyse and report upon the results of an experimental or analytical programme on a scientific topic. The module gives students the opportunity to attain achievement of a high level of personal development by working independently with the minimum necessary supervision. This module aims to provide students with the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring: the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility; decision-making in complex and unpredictable contexts; and, the learning ability needed to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature.
Formative feedback is provided on a weekly basis in the lecture/seminar sessions. These sessions are comprised of students working in similar areas of research which provides the opportunity for both peer and lecturer formative feedback. Students are supported by their supervisor with whom they are encouraged to facilitate regular contact. Students prepare interim reports, for which summative feedback is provided. Summative feedback is also provided on completion of the dissertation via assessment of the report, oral exam, and supervisors mark for process.
The research programme will be carried out in consultation with a supervisor who will normally be an academic staff member of the School of Human Sciences.
Students will gain experience in a variety of sports therapy arenas and they will continually develop in the ability to critically reason, interpret and produce treatment plans based on case notes of specific sports injuries. The module also introduces the students to aspects of sports medicine.
Year 4 modules include:
This module aims to provide the framework for students to undertake placement hours to support their development of professional skills in the working environment. The module also enables students to experience work with injured athletes in a variety of sports therapy environments. The module will run over the all three semesters and placement hours may be gained from the initial semester and / or the preceding summer period in order to spread the workload of students and enhance their experience.
The module aims are:
To provide a framework for enhancing theoretical knowledge and applying professional principles for a sports therapist
To provide an opportunity of working with injured athletes and live cases across a variety of sports therapy environments
To familiarise students with the ethical, legal, professional and administrative issues associated with working as a sports therapist
To promote the development of skills required of a sports therapist in the sports therapy environment
This module explores the contemporary and emerging practises in sports therapy and allows students to learn the theory supporting these skills and practical application and delivery of these methods, where appropriate. Students will develop the ability to critically approach advanced and emerging techniques to support their skills as Masters level sports therapists on graduation.
This module provides an opportunity for the student to undertake a substantial piece of research in one area of Sports Therapy & Exercise Science. The intention is to allow a thorough analysis and synthesis of theory and practice in relation to sports or exercise science. The research will require either the empirical collection of data or an original secondary analysis of existing data. This module also provides an opportunity for critical reflection of the research topic and self-reflection of learning, studying and research skills and knowledge.
On graduation you will be equipped with competencies, experience and qualifications to pursue a career as a sports therapist. You may find work in environments such as private injury clinics, sport and exercise organisations, the NHS, professional sports teams, higher education or research settings.
You could take your studies further by pursuing an MPhil or PhD.
