This hands-on taster course in children's book illustration, taught by an expert illustrator from London Met's School of Art, Architecture and Design, will help you create characters in a range of materials, investigate the relationship between text and image and gain an overview of the children's publishing industry.

The current children's book illustration market is highly vibrant and dynamic, and the art of visual storytelling is an ever-evolving tradition that is constantly being added to and redefined. This is the perfect course for those interested in pursuing a longer course in the subject, or those who just want to try something new.
It will be a fast-moving day where we'll explore creating characters in a range of materials, investigate the relationship between text and image and gain an overview of the children's publishing industry.
By the end of the course, you'll have:
  • created a series of quick, playful drawings
  • created some imaginary monster or animal characters
  • drawn or collaged a human character
  • made a simple illustration
  • sketched out a simple narrative storyboard
  • gained an overview of the children's publishing industry

Who's this course for?

This course is suitable for beginners with an interest in children's illustration and for more experienced designers or visual artists wanting to try something new.

Course structure

10.30am to 11am: Visual brainstorming exercise
11am to 12am: Creating imaginary characters
12pm to 1pm: Drawing child characters in lots of different ways including looking at facial expressions
2pm to 3pm: Creating a simple illustrated scene
3pm to 4pm: Sketching a simple three-panel narrative storyboard
4pm to 4.30pm: Q&A about the children's publishing industry
