The School of Art, Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University has a history of teaching creative skills to makers and artists from the local area and beyond, which stretches back to the 1800s. Upholstery has been taught at London Met, previously The London College of Furniture (which made up part of the wider institution), for the last 120 years.
The upholstery courses aim to give an in-depth understanding of the craft. They are professional courses teaching students the necessary skills to undertake both modern and traditional upholstery. The emphasis is very much on traditional skills, rounding off to modern techniques used today.
Learning is ‘hands on’ and student-led. Once students have been taught the fundamental techniques of upholstery, they are encouraged to complete their own projects (on show here). The facilities and equipment available to the students at London Met, along with the expert knowledge of our tutors, give the students the confidence and skills necessary to further themselves both within the upholstery industry and as designer/makers.
The courses are supported by the Worshipful Company of Upholders, who annually sponsor awards recognising the outstanding achievement of individual students. The University has been granted Associate Membership of the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF). In September 2015, the University became an AMUSF-approved training centre, offering their accredited professional qualification programme in Modern and Traditional Upholstery.
