Yuki Saito

London Met graduate Yuki Saito’s magnificent wigs are used in theatres, galleries and on the catwalk.

Yuki came to the UK from her home country of Japan and enrolled on a BA in jewellery, silversmithing and allied crafts at London Met.

She enjoyed the hands on, practical approach to teaching at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Media and Design (the Cass): “The Cass course gave me lots of freedom to design. It was also very informative about design history, which was really useful.”

Since her degree, Yuki has moved into professional wig making. Her creations, inspired by the French Baroque period, have been used in theatre productions, operas and on the catwalk. Her work has featured in Selfridges' window displays, in London Fashion Week and at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. You can currently see Yuki’s work in ARCADE Gallery on Sydney Street, West London.

“From its use of unconventional materials, my work communicates a set of moral values not based around wealth and high society but rather quality and love. Since my course I have learnt that designing can be an enriching and intellectual process.”

Asked what advice she would give to would-be designers, Yuki added: “Believe in yourself, follow your work and heart.”
