Single and Combined degrees (2011-12)

To give you maximum flexibility, we offer a range of Single and Combined Honours degrees.

Single Honours

You concentrate on one subject area. Some subjects, particularly those that lead to professional qualifications, can only be studied as Single Honours awards.

Combined Honours

You choose two subjects of equal weighting to study for a Combined Honours degree. There are over 60 subjects to study on each campus. See our list of Combined Honours subjects.

Modules

The basic building block of the degree is a module. Each module is worth 15 credits and an Honours degree is awarded to students who achieve 360 credits after successfully completing their three levels of study.

Each module focuses on a specific aspect of your subject. You will be studying some core modules, which are compulsory parts of the course, and some optional modules, which you can choose according to your own interests.

At each level of your course, there will be a different combination of core and optional modules. Further on in your course, you will generally have a greater choice of modules.

Different levels of study

A degree course is divided into three levels (or three years of full-time study:

Level 1 (The first year of full-time study) introduces you to your subject(s) and provides a firm foundation for more advanced study. You begin a process of personal development planning, guided by your tutor in a core subject Orientation module.

Level 2 (The second year of full-time study) gives you more opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you. Attention will be given to employability and professional practice in a core subject Employability module.

Level 3 (The final year of your course) allows you to undertake individual research projects and activities as preparation for employment or further study on postgraduate or professional courses.
