September 2012 startOverview
Economics is an important discipline for understanding the nature and determinants of the income, wealth, and wellbeing of individuals and nations. It explores major current debates on world economic growth, sustainability, banking and financial crises, world trade and global inequality as well as the everyday things of life including work, household income, saving, profit, congestion, and prices!
In a world where there is increasing debate about the scarcity of resources, including energy and raw materials, economics plays a key role in explaining how to allocate these resources efficiently.
We offer a variety of degree courses that provide a solid core of training in economics combined with the opportunity to specialise in areas such as finance or international business. Our students come from all parts of the UK and from over 70 countries worldwide. They exchange ideas, build lasting friendships and develop global networks.
Our teaching is rated as 'Excellent' by the QAA, which is the highest possible rating available for a UK University department.

Student profiles
'I could not be happier with my choice of course and university. On the BA Economics, I have been able to match my modules closely to my personal interests and to gain a great foundation for my future career. I have taken modules in Accounting and Financial Reporting, as well as in Economics and this combination of subjects enabled me to land a part-time job in Finance for an international fashion brand during my second year. In addition to enjoying very insightful and entertaining classes, I always felt genuine interest in my personal and career development from my lecturers. Advice and support from my teachers has enormous value for me, as I think everyone would agree that the ability to understand what you really want to do in life is priceless. I also had a chance to meet loads of people with the same interests as me, and a lot of them have become my very close friends. Overall, I think it is very important to get the maximum out of every situation in life, and this university offers an amazing opportunity to do that!'
