Overview

The Youth Work programme is an interdisciplinary course that will enable you to develop the skills, knowledge and values needed to become professionally qualified. Throughout the course there are opportunities for you to develop specialist areas of interest in working with young people and their communities. Key areas include making connections between theory and practice, developing reflective and ethical practice and implementing anti-oppressive work with young people. An essential feature is the assessed field-based professional practice in line with the requirements of the NYA and the national occupations standards for this sector.

Course contents

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

IT training and the use of digital media form an integral part of your degree. Throughout the Youth Work programme there are opportunities for you to develop your specialist area of interest. The programme will include assessed field-based professional practice in line with the requirements of the National Youth Agency. This is a key aspect of the programme.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Learning about Youth Work
  • Understanding how social policy  affects young people
  • Exploring concepts of values, power, rights and oppression
  • Foundation field-based placement

Level 2 topics include:

  • Learning about Power and Participation in Youth Work
  • Developing Reflective Practice
  • Developing skills in group and team work
  • Deeping knowledge and understandings of diversity and equality
  • Intermediate field-based Placement

Level 3 topics include:

  • Learning about Policy and Governance in Youth work
  • Preparing for Professional Practice
  • Developing research skills in youth and community work
  • Advanced field-based placement

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, reports, group presentations, practice-based portfolio and project work.

Career opportunities

Graduates have a wide choice of careers within the field of youth work. The course also equips students to consider career pathways in areas such as social research, community work, youth justice and social policy.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you must have at least 260 UCAS points or have completed an appropriate Access certificate. In addition you should have GCSE English (Grade C or Key Skills level 2). Applications are welcome from those from relevant Access courses. A minimum of 6 months relevant work experience (paid/voluntary) in youth/community work (or related field) is required. We welcome applications from mature candidates without formal qualifications who have relevant experience and can show an ability to study at this level. All offers of places are subject to satisfactory health and Police checks and suitable references.
