Telecommunications and Network Engineering (BEng Hons - Single)

Overview

The course aims to provide students with expertise in the fields of telecommunications and networks engineering. It emphasises all aspects of telecommunications and networks, whether wired or wireless, and it is strongly supported by an embedded vocational curriculum (Cisco CCNA) which greatly enhances the employability of our students. One of the strengths of the course is the practical aspect, allowing the students to develop hands-on competence and expertise. The course also aims to develop interpersonal, team working and IT skills and build up commercial, ethical and environmental awareness.

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

BSc Youth Studies shares a common level 1 with BSc Youth Work.

Level 1 topics include:

• Communications Engineering
• Networking Concepts (CCNA 1 & 2)
• Electronic Systems
• Engineering Mathematics

Level 2 topics include:

• Local and Wide Area Networks (CCNA 3 & 4)
• Network Operating Systems
• Engineering Management &  Ethics
• Signals and Systems
• Communications Systems
• Microprocessors and Computer Organisation

Level 3 topics include:

• Engineering Project
• Securing Computer Networks
• Wireless Networks
• Mobile and Wireless Communications
• Network Planning and Simulation
• Control Systems

Assessment

You are assessed via coursework reports, case studies, individual and group research assignments, written and laboratory-based examinations and a final Engineering project / dissertation with regular supportive feedback.

Spectacular advances in the field of Telecommunications and Computer Networks Engineering have made a huge impact on modern life. Good telecommunications and networks engineers are in very high demand from companies who design, install and maintain telecommunications and computer networks with local, regional, national and global reach as well as private and public networks. Examples of careers include Network Administrator, Network and Security Engineer / Designer / Manager / Consultant, Planning Analyst, LAN / WAN Support. Also, Mobile / Broadcasting / Wireless / Wired Telecommunications Architect / Designer / Developer / Manager / Consultant as well as in Telecommunications Services. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

The Faculty of Computing's World of Work (WoW) Agency offers opportunities to enhance employability skills, gain real experience and 'earn while you learn' through placements into real client-driven projects - working with business and industry.

Professional accreditation
The BEng courses are currently undergoing the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) accreditation. All students taking Accredited BEng courses can apply to become student members of the IET.  Student members will be automatically transferred to the class of Member of the IET (MIET) after graduation. Chartered Engineer is awarded after further studies (for example an MSc) and a number of years in a responsible position.
Students with Cisco CCNA certification from an approved Cisco academy may be exempt from the relevant CCNA modules in the course.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent), plus one of the following:

• a minimum of 220 points, of which at least 120 must be from a relevant area, from two or more A2/Vocational 6-unit awards, one of which must be Mathematics and the other Physics, Electronics or Engineering;

• or a minimum of 220 points, of which at least 120 must be from a relevant area, from a Vocational 12-unit award in Engineering;

• or a minimum of 220 points, of which at least 120 must be from a relevant area, from a BTEC National Diploma in Engineering or relevant subject area with at least MPP, Mathematics must be passed with a Merit grade.
