This course is designed to provide you with a broad, interdisciplinary approach to studying the contemporary social world. You will have a chance to study disciplines such as Anthropology, Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology, as well as acquire a range of important social research skills that will prepare you for work and life in general. There will also be opportunities to explore and discover your own specialist interests - through a flexible and innovatively delivered programme of study. The overall aim of the course is to produce graduates who are well-informed, interdisciplinary and confident in terms of their understanding of contemporary society. They will also have the skills necessary for future careers and/or further study in for example journalism, social research and the public services.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Ways of Studying Society
  • Introduction to Social Research
  • Understanding Social Change
  • Current Social Problems

Level 2 topics include:

  • Living and Working in a Global Society
  • City Life and Change
  • Individual and Society
  • Social Research Methods
  • Knowledge and Beliefs

Level 3 topics include:

  • Social Conflict
  • Sustainable Futures
  • Contemporary Social Thought
  • Applying Social Science
  • Dissertation

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, online tests, reports, individual and group presentations and a final dissertation.

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in journalism, social research and the public services. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent), plus at least 280 points, of which at least 180 must be from a relevant area. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Applications are welcome from mature students who have passed appropriate Access or other preparatory courses or have appropriate work experience.
