Overview

Lens Craft is the recording and presentation of still and moving images for art, media and design. The increasing use of digital technology has brought photography and video closer together and has provided the possibility for new kinds of image and new uses for the emerging technologies. What defines and enriches Lens Craft is a love for image making.This course is ideal for students who want to learn specialist lens based creative skills supported by a flexible education in broader media practice. All the lecturers are practicing artists and image-makers and the course is taught in the heart of London where creativity and technology meet.

Course contents

The BA Media Practice with Honours in Lens Craft is one of three pathways students may choose within the BA Media Practice course. There are three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Photography
  • Video
  • Visual Aesthetics
  • Introduction to Lens Craft

Level 2 topics include:

  • Visual Language
  • Compositing, Digital Lighting and Effects
  • History of Lens Craft
  • Image and Sound

Level 3 topics include:

  • Major Project: Pre-production
  • Marketing and self-promotion
  • Major project: Production

Assessment

Teaching and learning is through lectures, seminars, workshops and practical assignments. The main method of assessment is the critique of practical project presentations. In ‘crits’ you also learn through feedback from other students.

Professional accreditation

Appropriate prior experience and qualifications can be accredited, allowing direct entry to year 2 of the degree, subject to available places.

Collaborative and international links

Students have the opportunity to spend one semester studying in partner institutions in Europe or USA.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 280 points from two or more A-levels. You will also need five GCSEs of grade C or above (or equivalent). Maths GCSE is not required. Applicants with international qualifications and mature applicants are welcome. This course is also available as a four-year extended degree, the first year of which is the Foundation Year Art, Media, Design or the Extended Science Degree.
