Overview

The course examines the relationship between the media and popular culture, identity and lifestyle and media and globalisation. From studying television, radio, film, the press, the internet, and popular music through to the cultures and economics of global media, social media and media audiences, this course provides students with a critical understanding of the role media play in social, economic, political and cultural life. Options offer opportunities for you to pursue areas of interest and develop your expertise and practical skills in particular with regard to media, journalism, community radio, documentary making and advertising. The media studies course provides a curriculum taught by world-leading researchers in their field, with regular lectures and presentations from industry experts and practitioners.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • History of the Mass Media
  • Introduction to Media Studies and Reading Media Texts
  • Introduction to Digital Media, Digital Communications and Digital Culture
  • Information Technology and Society

Level 2 topics include:

  • Comparative International Communications
  • Political Economy of the Media
  • Digital Culture, Broadcast Media and Community Media
  • Media Production
  • Researching Media and Communications

Level 3 topics include:

  • Media, Culture and Identity
  • Globalisation and Media
  • Political Communications and Journalism
  • World Cinema: Hollywood and Beyond
  • Dissertation

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, reports, individual and group research projects and a final dissertation.

Career opportunities

Graduates can find careers within fields such as news organisations, advertising, digital media, education, market research, media production and management, public relations and publishing. Graduates can also go on to undertake postgraduate study.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have at least 280 points, including two or more A levels, Cambridge University Pre U diploma or certificate,  a Level 3 Advanced Diploma (or equivalent). English Language GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) is also required. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Applications are welcome from mature students who have appropriate Access or preparatory courses or appropriate work experience, or those without formal qualifications who are able to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, and the ability to benefit from higher education.

Accelerated study

It may be possible to enter the course at levels 2/3 if you have a relevant Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent.
