Overview

This course provides a thorough grounding in the essential legal subjects needed for professional legal training as a barrister or solicitor. It is designed to prepare students for the many careers for which legal knowledge is an advantage. A range of optional modules enable you to specialise and pursue your own interests. You will also acquire analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.The Director of Clinical Legal Education can help you find  legal work placements and pro bono work, and there are opportunites to argue your case in the mooting competitions held in our purpose-built Moot Courtroom.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits. Modules marked with * are required for a Qualifying Law Degree.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Law of Tort and Product Liability*
  • Criminal Law*

Level 2 topics include:

  • Public Law and Human Rights*
  • Property Law*
  • Public International Law and Institutions
  • Company and Commercial Law

Level 3 topics include:

  • Equity and Trusts*
  • European Union Law*
  • Family and Child Law
  • Media and Trade Marks Law
  • Immigration Law

  • Project or Placement

Assessment

Methods of assessment include essays, examinations, presentations and research projects.

Careers

Career opportunities

Students may go on to train as a solicitor or barrister. The LLB is a highly regarded qualification enabling graduates to pursue a wide range of careers in business, media and the public sector.

Professional accreditation

Recognised as a Qualifying Law Degree for progression to the Legal Practice Course (solicitors) or the Bar Course (barristers).

Collaborative and international links

Opportunities exist for study abroad in Europe (currently Amsterdam, Paris, Bologna).

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English at grade C or above, plus at least 300 points, including at least two A-levels or a level 3 Advanced Diploma, Higher Diploma or equivalent.
