Overview

This degree programme is designed to embrace trends in international people management as a result of UK companies extending their global reach, and of environmental and organisational changes. You will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of HRM employment and organisations including people resourcing, outsourcing, employee development, talent and reward management, managing employee performance & the HR function, employee relations and employment law, within a national and global context. The programme is also designed to develop effective practitioner-based skills, technological-based capabilities (E-enabled HRM) and more generic HR competences to accommodate the needs of students, the industry and our HR professional body (CIPD). These will help to further enhance the professional and employability skills of our students.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Managing People and Organisations
  • Global Business Environment/Understanding Markets
  • Analytical Skills for Business Management
  • Introduction to Business Law

Level 2 topics include:

  • HRM in a Global Context
  • The Contemporary Workplace: Changes and Challenges
  • Employment Law (CIPD accredited)
  • Options: Organisational Design Approaches and Applications, Employee Development, Issues in Employee Performance

Level 3 topics include:

  • Business Strategy and HRM/Strategy and HRM
  • Contemporary HRM Issues OR Management Report
  • Developing Professional Practice in Management & Work-based Learning
  • Options: Approaches to Diversity Management, Managing Employee Relations in Contemporary Organisations, Cross-Cultural Management

Assessment

A wide variety of interesting and innovative assessments are used across the course including essays, exams, individual and group presentations, work-based projects (internships), case studies, research projects and a final dissertation.

Careers

Graduates can expect to gain career opportunities in multinational organisations, service providers, third sector organisations, as well as work in many areas of the public sector and within the broad HRM field. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or postgraduate study.

Professional accreditation / exemption

Students can qualify for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Level 5 professional qualification.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 240 or more UCAS points, including at least 180 from two or more A levels (or equivalent, eg BTEC National, OCR Diploma or Advanced Diploma) in academic or Business subjects. English Language and Mathematics GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) are also required. These requirements may be varied in individual cases.

Accelerated study

It may be possible to enter the course at levels 2/3 if you have a relevant Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent.
