Overview

The importance of nutrition as a contributory factor to human health and disease is widely recognised. This degree, with an emphasis on applied and public health nutrition is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in nutrition both in the context of the NHS and the broader public and private sectors. The scientific study of nutrition also involves a thorough understanding of the physical, chemical, biological and social sciences.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

This will cover an introduction to human nutrition and the life sciences: topics you will study are General Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Human Physiology, an introduction to Human Nutrition, Socio-cultural aspects of Human Diets and an Introduction to Data Handling, Study Skills and Laboratory Skills.

Level 2 topics include:

In depth study of topics such as Physiological, Biochemical and Metabolic aspects of Energy, Protein, Vitamins and Minerals,  Measurement and Assessment of Dietary Intakes in Humans, Research Skills and there is an optional Work Placement.

Level 3 topics include:

Advanced study of areas such as Nutritional Epidemiology, Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition through the Lifecycle, Metabolic Nutrition. There is also an optional module in Sports Nutrition.  You will also undertake a year long research project.

Assessment

You are assessed via: essays; posters; examinations; computer based multiple choice; scientific reports; individual and group research projects and presentations; and a final dissertation.

Careers

There are many employment opportunities for Public Health Nutritionists in the public sector, in local and national government, in health or food departments and in health promotion units. Industry, the charitable, academic education and research sectors employ public health nutritionists as well as food manufacturers and retailers. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's minimum entry requirements, you should have GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent). In addition applicants are normally expected to achieve at least 240 points from two or more A levels, including a minimum grade C in Biology; or at least 240 points from two A levels (Applied subjects) in science; or a BTEC National Diploma in Science with MMM and at least four merits in the final year (excluding common skills). Applicants undertaking Advanced Diploma courses also need to achieve 240 UCAS points and meet the science requirements, which require level 3 Science qualifications in addition to the Advanced Diploma.

Entry from appropriate scientific Foundation and Access courses is also considered

Applications for advanced entry to year 2 or 3 of this programme will be assessed on an individual basis.  All applicants requesting advanced entry must supply a full and official transcript of their grades and modules plus at least one academic reference from their university.
