Overview

This course investigates a wide range of contemporary health and social policy issues. It examines the impact of social, economic and environmental factors on health and wellbeing. It also explores contemporary issues in planning and providing health and social care. The course emphasises employability and therefore provides you the opportunity to apply your learning to real world scenarios. The course prepares you for a range of future careers in health and social policy-related public or private sector organisations or may enable you to continue to further your study

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Understanding health and social care
  • Understanding health and social care policy
  • The context of health
  • Social Problems
  •  

Level 2 topics include:

  • Health, illness and society
  • Understanding research and ethics in health and social care
  • Comparative health and social care policy
  • Poverty
  • Homelessness

Level 3 topics include:

  • Management of health and social care
  • Education
  • Experiencing illness, disability and wellbeing
  • Project portfolio: health and social care in London
  • Work placement

Assessment

You are assessed using a variety of means which may include essays, individual and group presentations, exams, online quizzes, diaries and projects

Careers

This degree prepares you for careers within the National Health Service and in other health sector bodies. Successful completion also offers you improved career opportunities in central and local government, voluntary charity and care agencies, pressure groups, research institutes and private companies. Some students continue to Masters Degrees.

Collaborative and international links

The Centre for Primary Health and Social Care has research and teaching links with the City University of New York, USA and the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. Students will be able to benefit from these collaborations and in some instances may be involved in active projects and on-line discussion with their peers on similar international programmes.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements , you should have at least 280 points, including two or more A levels, a Level 3 Advanced Diploma (or equivalent). English Language GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) is also required. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Applications are welcome from mature students with appropriate Access or other preparatory courses or appropriate work experience. We also welcome mature students without formal qualifications who are able to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, and the ability to benefit from higher education.
