Overview

The course provides a comprehensive, comparative approach to health and social care. It is delivered in an interactive way, helping you to develop your confidence, knowledge and skills required for your future career. We will cover all key aspects including public health, health promotion, policy and ethical aspects of care. There are opportunities for work placements. A clear focus of this programme is developing your ability to use evidence to inform your decisions and be able to understand the critical issues in health and social care and ways of dealing with them.

Course contents

There are three levels, each of 120 credits.

 

Level 1 topics include:

  • Understanding health and social care
  • Professional and ethical issues in health and social care
  • Understanding health and social care policy
  • Understanding evidence based practice

 

Level 2 topics include:

  • Health, illness and society
  • Health promotion & public health 
  • Comparative health and social care policy
  • Understanding research and ethics in health and social care
  • Groups and teamwork

 

Level 3 topics include:

  • Partnership working in health & social care
  • Management of health and social care
  • Experiencing illness, disability and wellbeing
  • Project portfolio: health and social care in London
  • Work placement

 

Assessment

You are assessed in a variety of ways including essays, individual reports, posters, seen examinations and a final project portfolio.

Careers

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in the health and social care fields this may be within the NHS, voluntary and independent sectors. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Professional accreditation / exemption

This programme is aligned to Skills for Health Competences – this is the skills sector council for the NHS and students will be able to map their competences by the end of the programme enhancing their employment opportunities.

Collaborative and international links

The Centre for Primary Health and Social Care has research and teaching links with the City University of New York, USA and the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. Students will be able to benefit from these collaborations and in some instances may be involved in active projects and on-line discussion with their peers on similar international programmes.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements , you should have at least 280 points, including two or more A levels, a Level 3 Advanced Diploma (or equivalent). English Language GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) is also required. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Applications are welcome from mature students with appropriate Access or other preparatory courses or appropriate work experience. We also welcome mature students without formal qualifications who are able to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, and the ability to benefit from higher education.
