Overview

The course provides a wide-ranging examination of film and television cultures, considering a variety of national and industrial contexts, and drawing essential links between practice and theory. Students are guided through a combination of theoretical, historical and cultural approaches as they explore American, British, European and World cinema and television from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Practice-based projects in short filmmaking and screenwriting are enabled by up-to-date facilities, including an advanced digital editing suite and students develop transferrable skills through a variety of teaching methods.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits. If you take a Joint, you study each subject for 60 credits at each level.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Theorising Film
  • Approaches to Film and Television History
  • Moving Image Practice
  • American Film and Television Genres

Level 2 topics include:

  • Stardom and Performance
  • Truth and Fiction in Film and Television
  • Exploring Film and Digital Practice
  • European Cinema

Level 3 topics include:

  • Hollywood and American Culture
  • Artists’ Film and Surrealism
  • Gender, Reception and Interpretation
  • Film and Philosophy

Assessment

Assessment is via written coursework, practical group work, in-class exams and a final dissertation or practice/theory project.

Careers

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in the media industries as well as a wide variety of professions including teaching. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study. Employability and transferrable skills are an integral aspect of the course.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, students should normally have 260 points from at least two ‘A’ levels, a Level 3 Diploma, or equivalent. Mature students are also encouraged to apply..
