Overview

This course brings together these two disciplines to focus on the problem of crime and its relationship to the wider social structure and social change. It provides a theoretical grounding, exploring and analysing the apparatuses of social control, the relationship between the individual and society and a range of social divisions. Whilst providing you with the methodological skills you need, this course also offers a stimulating environment for those who want to work within the police, the probation service, the justice system, journalism, social research and the public services.

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to Criminological Theory
  • The Criminal Justice System
  • Social Research Methods
  • Social Problems

Level 2 topics include:

  • Crime in Context
  • Perspectives on Policing
  • Society and the Individual
  • Interactive Research Methods
  • Youth Crime and Violence

Level 3 topics include:

  • Justice, Punishment and Society
  • Crime Control
  • The Criminology of Pleasure
  • Contemporary Social Theory
  • Research Design and Analysis

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, seen and unseen examinations and a final dissertation.
