Overview

This course will provide a professional education in the theory and practice of computing, with special emphasis on the techniques, theory and applications in industry and commerce. The course covers principles of programming, operating systems, network technology, application development and software engineering. The course develops the skills necessary for you to demonstrate professional competence enabling you to work successfully in the computing industry. You will have the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you in year 3.

Course contents

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits. If you take a Joint degree you study each subject for 60 credits at each level.

Level 4 topics include:

  • Logic and Problem Solving
  • Programming
  • Computer Hardware & Software Architectures
  • Information Systems

Level 5 topics include:

  • Networks & Operating Systems
  • Software Engineering
  • Emerging Programming Platforms and Techniques
  • Databases
  • Professional Issues, Ethics and Computer Law

Level 6 topics include:

  • Project
  • Application Development
  • Advanced database systems development
  • Work Related Learning II
  • A designate choice from areas which may include Specialist Programming (CU5010), IT Security Management (CC5052), Artificial Intelligence (CU6007) and Management Support Systems(CC6052)

Assessment

You are assessed in each module mainly via essays, individual course work, exams, research projects and a final dissertation with regular supportive feedback.

Professional accreditation

Accreditation is being sought with the British Computer Society (BCS).

 

Career opportunities

The course helps students grow professionally and prepares them to work in the field of application development as professional programmers, software system developers, IT consultants, database designers or web application developers. It is also excellent preparation for further research/study.

The Faculty of Computing's World of Work (WOW) Agency offers opportunities to enhance employability skills, gain real experience and 'earn while you learn' through placements into real client-driven projects - working with business and industry.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above, and at least 200 points from two or more A-levels, of which at least 120 must be from numerate subjects in science, engineering, economics or information technology. Other Level-3 qualifications accepted include:

  • BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Progression Diploma
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credit) in a computing or science related subject, with at least 45 credits at level 3.

 

Extended degree course

Applicants who do not fully meet the entry requirements may be eligible to start a BSc Computing Extended Degree leading to a final award in BSc Computing, or may be considered for entry to the FDSc in Computing.

 

Accelerated study

If you have prior academic qualifications or relevant work-based experience you may be exempt from part of the course.
