Overview

The course is designed to equip students with a sound academic knowledge and a broad range of key skills, technical skills and work related skills through effective education and professional work placement. It provides students with essential analytical skills to analyse, design, develop and implement computer applications for a given task.

The course provides a platform for effective progression to higher level study within the university or other institutions through the credit transfer/accumulation scheme and increases employment opportunity through work placement and work related study.

Course structure

Two levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Logic and Problem Solving
  • Programming
  • Computer Hardware & Software Architectures
  • Information Systems

Level 2 topics include:

  • Work Experience
  • Databases and Web-based Information Systems
  • Systems Analysis, Design and Implementation
  • Computer Networks

Assessment

The assessment process consists of examinations, individual or group assignments, presentations and an industrial placement report withy regular supportive feedback.

Careers

Career opportunities

Students graduating from the FDSc Computing would be able to take up junior/trainee positions in computing industries, which may include user support, technical support, computer operations, application programming, analysis & design, web and database design. Students successfully completing the Foundation Degree will be able to progress to the final year (Honours level) of the BSc Computing or BSc Information Technology course.

The Faculty of Computing's World of Work (WoW) Agency offers opportunities to enhance employability skills, gain real experience and 'earn while you learn' through placements into real client-driven projects - working with business and industry.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent), and one of the following:

  • 120 points on A Levels or AS levels, or equivalent such as BTEC National Diploma in Computing, Advanced NVQ or Advanced Vocational Certificate in Education (AVCE)
  • mature students will be considered on the basis of suitable work experience and qualifications.
