Overview

The main aim of this course is to provide students with a general education in the area of computer games development, with an emphasis on Computer Graphics (CG) for games (concept artwork, 2D/3D assets and character models, animation, textures and rendering, and special effects SFXs). This requires a solid CG knowledge background and a high level of appropriate techniques and relevant tools. The degree aims to equip students with skills for professional careers in CG, games design & modelling, problem solving, teamwork, 2D/3D asset production, visual presentation and communication.

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to Computer Graphics & Games
  • Game Design
  • 3D Modelling and Animation Basics
  • 2D console game development – team based

Level 2 topics include:

  • Toy Design
  • 3D Character Modelling and Animation
  • Modelling and Texturing
  • 3D console game development – team based

Level 3 topics include:

  • Individual Project
  • Prototype Development (team based 3D console)
  • SFX for Games
  • Internship at GameLab, our industry-facing partner

Assessment

You are assessed via written reports, demonstrated artefact designs and solutions, exams, individual/group assignment work presentations, and a final project with regular supportive feedback.

Career opportunities

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in the Computer Games industry or professional practice in a range of various positions from concept artist, technical artist, graphics designer to technical asset artist, character/model builder, texture artist, character animator, environment artist, SFX artist, and etc. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 220 UCAS points including at least 120 from relevant subjects (or equivalent) along with a minimum of grade C in Maths and English (or pass the faculty internal English and Maths tests). Those with relevant professional qualifications or extensive professional experience will also be considered.
