Overview

The BSc (Hons) Computer Animation degree aims to build on your enthusiasm and passion for computer animation and ensure your development in the creative, technical, business, and professional skills the animation and related sectors are looking for.
An ability to produce animation requires both creative and technical skills and this course will provide you with an opportunity to develop both. Working in digital 2D and 3D with moving images, sound and narrative, you will create animations for many different types of market including the web/internet, mobile, games, emerging cyber-communities & virtual environments.

Course contents

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to Computer Graphics & Games
  • Drawing and Acting, 2D Animation
  • 3D Modelling and Animation Basics
  • Stop Motion Animation, First Principles

Level 2 topics include:

  • History of Animation
  • 3D Character Modelling and Animation
  • Creating and Developing Sound for Multimedia (Digital) Applications
  • Character Animation and Realism Compositing, After-Fx and Post-production Techniques

Level 3 topics include:

  • Individual Project
  • Team Animation Project
  • Individual Animation Project Production and Post Production
  • Internship or work placement, which could be at GameLab, our industry-facing partner

Assessment

You are assessed via coursework, exams, individual and group projects with regular supportive feedback.

Careers

Professional accreditation

This course has been designed after consultation with leading UK post-production and special effects company Rushes and the animation team at London Met are working closely with Skillset towards accreditation.

 

Career opportunities

When you graduate, you will be skilled at producing a range of commercial-quality animation projects and have produced a showcase of client-centred productions as well as a portfolio of innovative projects. You will also have had the opportunity to take part in a short work placement with a commercial animation studio, work placement as a new media educator or in an educational environment. Your work will address the requirements of future trends, emerging markets and online communities.

The Faculty of Computing’s World of Work (WoW) Agency offers opportunities to enhance employment skills, gain real experience and ‘earn while you learn’ through placements into real client driven projects – working with business and industry.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should also have 200 UCAS points including at least 120 from relevant subjects (or equivalent) along with a minimum of grade C in Maths and English (or pass the faculty internal English and Maths tests). Those with relevant professional qualifications or extensive professional experience will also be considered.
