Overview

This course is unique in its applied focus which links social anthropological theory to a range of professional areas. The course explores the work of social anthropologists in human rights, international and national community development, health, tourism, environmentalism, politics and business. Students will develop their ethnographic research skills throughout the degree and have opportunities to conduct research in a number of international settings including South Asia and East and West Africa. Students will also be encouraged to pursue work experience in the UK and abroad through the International Centre for Community Development - www.londonmet.ac.uk/iccd

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to Social Anthropology
  • Cultures and Magic
  • Anthropological Imagination
  • Crisis and Conflict

Level 2 topics include:

  • Understanding Applied Anthropology
  • Racism
  • Food and Power
  • Doing Ethnography

Level 3 topics include:

  • Cultures, Beliefs and Globalisation
  • Gender, Anthropology and Development
  • Body and Health
  • The Anthropology Project

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, individual and group research projects, exams and a final dissertation.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have at least 300 points, including two or more A-levels., a Level 3 Advanced Diploma ( or equivalent) English Language GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) is also required. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Applications are welcome from mature students who have passed appropriate Access or other preparatory courses or have appropriate work experience.
