We offer flexible degrees, committed and expert teaching, a supportive learning environment and the opportunity to study in the City of London - one of the biggest and most dynamic financial centres in the world. Our links with professional bodies and the emphasis we give to equipping you with the competencies required by employers will give you a head start in finding a rewarding career.
We place great emphasis on developing the employability of our students. All courses develop both subject and transferable skills, such as team-working and
communication, which are so valued by employers. We also encourage you to take advantage of opportunities for work experience. On some courses this takes the form of a year-long sandwich placement between the second and final year of the course.
For other courses, where work-placements are not compulsory, you can
usually undertake an extended work placement as an option, or take a
shorter work-placement module either as a five-week block over the
summer, part-time, or one or two days a week over one or both semesters
in your final year.
Our Business Relations Office helps students secure placements and
works with hundreds of organisations, both nationally and
internationally. Recent employers have included Air France, Arsenal
Football Club, Barclays Bank, BBC Worldwide, Chester Boyd, HSBC,
Limelight Projects, Orient Express
and the Hilton Hotel Group. One of our placement students on the
BA Events Management and Marketing course says, "Working in the BBC
Events and Exhibitions department was enjoyable and challenging. I was
an assistant for the Gardeners' World Live exhibition. The London Met
Placement Office was great in helping me to prepare for my interview
and providing necessary support on my studies."
As well as a well-stocked library and modern ICT labs using
cutting-edge technology, our facilities include a Bloomberg Research
Trading Room where
you can get hands-on experience of a dealing room and a flight
simulator on which Aviation students can get experience of landing an
aircraft. We continue
to invest in learning materials and colleagues within LMBS are
working with their counterparts at the Universities of Cambridge and
Nottingham to develop electronic learning resources.
The School’s commitment to teaching is reflected in the award of a
National Teaching Fellowship to Dr Guglielmo Volpe. Some tips from
Guglielmo on preparing for study at University can be found on the LMBS website.
The world is becoming a smaller place and LMBS is aware of the need to provide students with an education that equips them to deal with this. The University’s study abroad programmes provide you with an opportunity to study in another country and strengthen your CV. For Economics and International Business students there is the opportunity to study at the University of Lund or the University of Stockholm. For Banking and Finance students, and in collaboration with the Fachhochschule, Frankfurt there is the opportunity to study and work for a year in Germany. Some exchanges are supported financially and teaching is in English. Whatever course you are following, the opportunity exists to study in Europe for a semester under the
ERASMUS and Socrates schemes. The value of such exchanges is clear as one of our second year business students explains, "Whilst studying abroad it is possible to develop so much as an individual. You learn how to interact with new people and adapt to a new environment. I will never forget the time I spent abroad."
In addition, we help students to secure work placements abroad. Recent overseas-based employers of our students include Disney (Florida and Paris), Rail Europe, DICR Europe Ltd, Eurocity Consultants (Brussels), Dunas Hotel (Grand Canaria), Siemens (Germany), Orient Express Hotels and Trains and Cruises Worldwide.
"The experience gained whilst working abroad provides an excellent opportunity to develop transferable skills and ultimately enhances employability to a great extent," explains our student who worked for the Japanese Olympic Committee in Tokyo last year.
Those who remain in London for their studies will be able to exchange ideas with students from over 100 countries. Additionally, through our links with universities throughout the world, your lecturers will be aware of global trends in business and management education and will use this insight in the work with you.
Our graduates can be found working in many countries and in all sectors of the economy. Some of the organisations where our students have found employment include BP, Coutts Bank, Daiwa, Deloitte and Touche, Deutsche
Morgan Grenfell, Forte UK, Marks and Spencer, Rank Xerox, Royal Bank of Scotland and Virgin.
Our courses benefit from the research activity conducted by staff, which in the last Research Assessment Exercise was rated as being of national excellence or better. Staff act as consultants for a variety of organisations and this work also helps to inform our teaching and courses.
