The Department brings together a wide spectrum of subject expertise, combining professionally recognised qualifications with innovative and socially orientated courses.
Courses
The Department is one of thelargest of its kind in the UK. With approximately one hundred specialist academic staff, it offers a wide range of high-quality courses in Law, Governance and International Relations. Students can choose single-discipline courses such as the LLB and International Relations or multidisciplinary programmes such as Governance and Law, Development Studies or International Law and International Politics. There are also more
vocational training programmes, such the Foundation degree in Advice Work.
Excellence
The Department is committed to excellence in teaching and research and its performance is reviewed by external national bodies. The Law Society and the Bar Council officially recognise our LLB programmes as Qualifying Law Degrees, enabling students to proceed to the next stage of training for professional practice in law. Our programmes in Governance and International
Relations, as well as Law, were given the highest ratings by the Quality Assurance Agency.
Facilities
Teaching takes place on two main sites, both located in Islington
and the historic City of London, two of London’s liveliest boroughs.
Both sites have well-stocked libraries and IT facilities, as well as
Undergraduate Centres that offer you academic support and advice. Law
students enjoy the purpose-built Mock Courtroom at City where the annual
mooting competition takes place.
Career Prospects
The Department places considerable emphasis not just on high quality teaching, but also on enhancing your prospects of suitable employment after
graduation. Law students, for example, benefit from the Law Graduate Employability Network, which brings them together with City practices, high-street law firms and non-governmental organisations. Students in Governance and International Relations benefit from modules specifically designed to highlight how the knowledge and skills they acquire equip them for success in building careers in their chosen field of interest. Our graduates have built careers in a variety of fields, including as members of Parliament, government advisors, the United Nations and the world of business.
London and the World
The Department is dedicated to making the most of its location at the heart of one of the world’s most exciting cities. We have strong links with London’s legal and political communities, as well as with the city’s large community of
scholars. Our students and staff come from over 150 different countries, as well as many from London itself. Students can choose to spend a semester on exchange in other attractive cities, such as Madrid, Chicago, Istanbul or Paris.
