School of Education

The Department of Education has an established reputation for the quality of its initial and post-qualification teacher education and education studies.

Students in a discussion

The majority of our research in education was judged to be of national excellence in the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise.

We have considerable experience in meeting the challenges of urban education. Our initial teacher education courses are particularly effective in preparing students to teach in multilingual, multicultural, inner-city schools. Our education graduates have an excellent employment record. We work closely with other institutions, from LEAs and community agencies to schools, early years centres and education action zones.

Linked to the department is theInformation Technology Learning Exchange, which delivers training to primary teachers throughout London. Training materials have
been produced and responses from schools and teachers have been very favourable. The provision has recently been successfully assessed by the Teacher Training Agency.

We are developing overseas links, particularly in Europe and the USA, to give us an international dimension.

The department was recently inspected by Ofsted, who commented in particular on the strong common ethos within the tutor team, good communication with schools, and well planned partnership days.
