Artwork by Françoise Dupré Opens 26 May, free of charge
French-born, London-based artist Françoise Dupré makes work that celebrates women’s creativity, and re-contextualises knitting and stitching activities traditionally associated with the domestic space.
This exhibition brings together a series of her installations that use many craft forms, often manipulating the transformative quality of crafting to create ephemeral, playful, extraordinary sculptural patterns and objects. Her work uses a wide range of everyday, disposable objects and materials including yarn, wire and plastic bottle tops.
A major piece in the exhibition is OUVRAGE [uvra:z], created during Françoise’s residency at the French Cultural Centre in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Using French (spool) knitting, stitching, traditional and unusual materials, the project shows how domestic crafts can transcend cultures and language barriers.
Another installation features wall panels made from shopping bags - woven polypropylene - to remind us of their associations and everyday use, from carrying the daily local shopping to being carriers of goods across continents.
