Support for London Met teaching
Feedback from examiners and tutors has indicated that using special collections like those held at The Women's Library and the TUC Library can significantly enhance student motivation and achievement.

We support teaching on a range of London Metropolitan University courses, including Sociology, Digital Media, Employment, Literature, History, Law, Fine Art, Business Studies.

Support can be given at different levels:

  • Tutors may wish to use examples from the collections in their teaching (such as supporting a specific learning activity, e.g. using an image to prompt a debate).
  • Links can be made from WebLearn to TWL Source Notes to assist students in identifying appropriate sources, such as Health Studies BSc linking to our Women and Health Source Note
  • Introductory tours can be given to groups of students, either for modules with gender specific theme, such as the women and law module; or where there is a physical format that would support a course - such as History students learning about archives, art and design students accessing our poster or zine collections, or architecture students using our RIBA award winning building as a case study!  Remember, tours of the Reading Room and Exhibition tailored to the needs of your students especially if these are repeated as part of the curriculum
  • Professional Collections staff can be invited to be guest lecturers on appropriate courses, such as Arts and Heritage MA or the Life Histories MA
  • Staff can also deliver sessions on research methods, such as the session delivered as part of the Graduate School Research Skills Module
  • Students can create Exhibition content as part of their courses, such as Women's History, the Life History or the Digital Media MAs (although this approach requires a high level of commitment from the tutor and it can be difficult to co-ordinate the exhibition and teaching timetables, it can also be an amzing experience for the students)
  • Collections can be used to support Learning Objects, such as the collaborative work carried out with LondonMet's GLO Maker.

To arrange a tour or to find out how The Women's Library can support your work, contact Inderbir Bhullar, Information Librarian, on i.bhullar@londonmet.ac.uk.

Student Prizes
The Castens Prize
is an annual prize for final year undergraduate academic work using the Library collections. In 2007, we ran a creative writing competition for London Met students from which selected work was displayed in an exhibition.

Research Staff at LondonMet
The University Special Collections, The Women's Library and the Trades Union Congress Library, have recently established an Academic Panel, which seeks to encourage use of these internationally acclaimed collections by the research staff of LondonMet.

We are currently pursing several ideas with members of the Panel, but please contact us if you have any ideas or questions.

One simple example of best practice is in encouraging prospective PhD students to explore our Collections.  Where Supervisors identify collections that mesh with the research areas they wish to supervise we should be able to attract more students to the research community at LondonMet. This is best done on the staff profile web page, such as Dr Wendy Stokes page.

LondonMet Gender Interest Group

The Gender Interest Group is a network for staff at London Metropolitan University with research interests in gender across a range of disciplines, administered by The Women's Library.  Research and teaching seminars are held at The Women's Library and there is an email distribution list for discussion and announcements of interest to members.
