Textile portraits of female role models adorned banners by four groups of local women in the 2007 showing of our returning exhibition What Women Want.

Rosa Parks was celebrated as 'the first black woman to sit down for her rights', while Princess Diana was recognised for her charity work, beauty, and role as a 'good mother'.

Participants in our project with Limehouse-based visual arts and textile group Stitches in Time produced work on the theme of 'inspirational women' after visiting The Women's Library to learn about our suffrage banners.

Local school girls and young women worked with artists Diana England, Parul Jani, Isatu Taylor, Sheila McQuaid and Zoe Dutton.

The participants' artwork featured a diverse selection of women role models chosen by the project participants, including Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, journalist Kate Adie and Sumaya zawjaat Yasir, the first martyr in Islam.
