Several projects were themed around our 2004 exhibition, Beauty Queens: Smiles, Swimsuits and Sabotage.
Beauty? Young women from Mulberry School and a group of local older women were brought together at The Women’s Library by intergenerational arts charity Magic Me.
Working with writer Sue Mayo, performance poet Leah Thorn, and photographer Anita McKenzie, they produced photographs and poems on the theme of Beauty?, and the results were displayed in a foyer exhibition.
Throughout the project, the women discussed their feelings about Beauty and Image, and expressed their responses through visual images and creative writing, covering themes including peer pressure, possessions, make-up, and men.
The project culminated in two performances, the first on the exhibition’s launch night, and the second in front of an audience from Mulberry Girls’ School.
Beauty? was funded by the Lucas Tooth Trust and Awards for All.
Summer Sizzlers Summer Sizzlers was a series of drop-in activity sessions for children with games, art activities and a dressing-up parade.
Children and their parents enjoyed making crowns, rosettes and trophies inspired by the Beauty Queens exhibition at our free summer holiday craft sessions.
BA Fine Art Cafe exhibition BA Fine Art students from London Metropolitan University worked together with artist Jessica Voorsanger to make work responding to the theme of the beauty contest. The results were displayed in The Women’s Library’s Wash Houses Cafe.
