75 Years of Women's Votes

A banner by pupils from St Michael’s RC School, Stockton-on-Tees

[Next]

Pupils from schools around the country made campaigning banners inspired by those in The Women’s Library’s collections for a competition celebrating 75 years of equal franchise. The banners covered issues important to the pupils, including world peace, votes at sixteen, and the right to education.

At a special award ceremony held at The Women’s Library, author Jacqueline Wilson congratulated the pupils and spoke of the quality of the entries. The pupils then stayed to learn more about the banners held at The Women’s Library, viewing a range of our original suffrage materials, and hearing about the struggles for the right to vote.

This project was held in conjunction with the Fawcett Society, and sponsored by BT.
