New workshop for Media Studies and Sociology students - 'Between the Covers: Women's Magazines and their Readers'
Between the Covers: Women's Magazines and their Readers
Workshops from December 2008 to April 2009
The Women's Library's current exhibition takes a fresh look at the world of magazine publishing, from its roots in the late 1600s to the present day. The exhibition focuses on the producers, the content and the readership of a wide range of women's magazines drawn from the Library's collection of over 3,000 titles, from Spare Rib to Heat. There is also oral history from women involved in the production of magazines and an engaging film looking at how women feel about the magazines they read.
We are offering a free 2 hour workshop that includes time in the exhibition and facilitated discussion. This builds on the success of our education programmes for the previous exhibitions Prostitution: What's Going On? and Sinners, Scroungers, Saints: lone mothers past and present, which nearly 1,000 young people attended.
Workshops will enable students to explore issues including:
- the representation of women in magazines
- the role of magazines in the formation of gender identities
- the relationship between readers and producers
- consumerism and magazines
