Toward the Millennium
The Centenary was followed by a difficult period. Work with girls in industry was hampered by recession and widespread unemployment and the Society’s financial problems returned, despite the sale of its holiday homes which had become underused. In the 1980s and ‘90s the Society reviewed its aim and function. A new name, 'GFS Platform for Young Women', was adopted for campaigning and outreach work, emphasizing the commitment to help 'girls and women to develop spiritually, personally and socially.' A Members' promise, to 'serve our Lord Jesus Christ', reinforced the Society’s Christian identity, although girls unable to make the promise were still permitted to join in GFS activities. Also, the GFS was placed firmly in the hands of its Members by becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee, with every Member over the age of 18 a member of the Company with a right to elect the Executive.
Opposite: 5GFS/12/1/1 Tea towel with a visual pun on the Society's motto. The omission of 'ye' was in keeping with the promotion of a modern image, yet at a time when many women were fighting for equality the retention of the tea towel as the medium for the message suggests modernisation was partial.
