Cataloguing Priorities

Printed Collections cataloguing
Museum Collections cataloguing
Archive Collections cataloguing

We aim to provide sustainable access to our collections through catalogues that conform to professional standards. We have a timetable for processing uncatalogued material 2006-2009 as set out below. All newly created records for the Printed Collections and newly created catalogues for the Archive and Museum Collections are available on the Library's catalogues. Newly catalogued archives are highlighted on the Library's website.
We plan to introduce a cross-domain catalogue search facility to improve access across our collections.

Printed Collections cataloguing
As at June 2006 there are approximately 20,000 uncatalogued items in the Printed Collections, the majority of which are pamphlets. This represents approximately one-third of the Printed Collections.

Cataloguing priorities are as follows:
Newly acquired material, through purchase and donation, is given priority and is catalogued as part of the Library's ongoing cataloguing programme.

The Josephine Butler Society Library pamphlets (3690 pamphlets) are being catalogued at present with funding from The Wellcome Trust. This project is due to complete in April 2007.

The UDC pamphlets (16000 pamphlets) will be catalogued from 2007 with a proposed completion date of 2012.

Parts of the collection without full catalogue records - single issue periodicals, zines, ephemera and press cuttings - can be identified through web listings or card indexes in the Reading Room.

Museum Collection cataloguing
Due to an ARHC funded 3 year cataloguing project the Museum Collection has been catalogued. The curator deals with additional museum accessions on an ongoing basis. Catalogued museum objects can be identified via the online catalogue.

Archive Collection cataloguing
As at December 2005 there were 186 un-catalogued archives and 15 partially catalogued archives, where there have been accruals to existing material. There was a total of 451 archives. This equates to a total of 2500 un-catalogued boxes.

Cataloguing priorities are as follows:
The Assistant Archivist catalogues small archives (less than 5 boxes) concentrating on newly acquired material and archives of which researchers have requested access.

The Project Archivist (s) catalogue medium-large sized archives (more than 5 boxes), dependant on external funding.

Current Projects:
The Project Archivist is cataloguing the Association for Moral & Social Hygiene (3AMS) and the Josephine Butler Letters (3JBL).

This will be followed by the Helena Normanton archive for which we have secured funding. We are currently pursuing funding for two themes 'Women in Media' and 'Women in Education'. 2nd Wave Feminism is a key Collection Development area and as such we will be prioritising existing and new archive catalogues in this theme.
