Scope
The Women's Library's Museum Collection contains more than 4,000 objects and encompasses an impressive range of material documenting women's campaigning activities.

A wealth of subjects are covered including women's rights, suffrage, sexuality, health, education, employment, reproductive rights, violence against women, peace campaigning, the family, and employment.

The emphasis is primarily on women in Britain, but some international material is included.

The material largely falls into the following categories:

Textiles: banners, flags, sashes, t-shirts and other material produced by campaigning organisations. At the heart of this collection there are over 50 banners made by the British women's suffrage movement. The banner collection is catalogued in our online catalogue with digital images attached. Digital images of this material are also available at AHDS Visual Arts.

Objects: badges, ceramics, board games and other objects produced to propagandise, promote or commemorate women's campaigning activities.

Ephemera: posters, postcards, printed souvenir material publicising or promoting social and political campaigns and personal ephemera.

Photographs: documentary images recording the women's suffrage campaign, inter-war reform campaigns, and feminist campaign activities of the 1970s and 1980s; portraits of notable women. A selection of this material is available to view on the Mary Evans Picture Library website.

Catalogues and access
The collection has been catalogued and is being made available to search online. As at December 2006 the postcard, poster and banner collections can be searched in our online catalogue. Where possible, images have been attached to the object descriptions.

In the meantime, you can contact us if you have any specific queries about the collection's content.

Visitors are welcome to view items form the Museum Collection but, due to the size and fragility of some of the material, appointments do need to be made in advance. To make an appointment, please contact us by phone, post or email.
