Peter McCaffery, Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter McCaffery BA (Hons), MSc (Econ), PGCE, PhD, FCIPD, FCMI, FRSA 

Peter McCaffery joined London Metropolitan University as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in March, 2011. He was formerly Vice Chancellor of the University of Cumbria, Pro Vice Chancellor at London South Bank University and, previous to that, the Vice-Principal of the University of Bolton and Dean of the Faculty of European, International and Social Studies at Thames Valley University.

Peter has over thirty years teaching and research experience in American Studies and History across a range of levels from GCSE to Ph.D in a variety of institutions from further education colleges to U.S. Ivy League.

Awarded a Ph.D by the London School of Economics and Political Science, Peter was appointed Idlewild International Teaching Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and Research Associate at the Greater Philadelphia Project (a US Federal government affirmative action initiative on urban regeneration) where he pioneered new modes of inquiry into political corruption in the American City.  

Awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship in 1997-98, his research on international university innovators, change management, performance management and staff development has been published widely in broadsheet newspapers and professional magazines.

Peter has acted as consultant for a variety of bodies including the British Council, Opportunity Now Employers Federation, the governments of Botswana and Jamaica and the Centre for HE, Germany as well as having been a governor of the most improved secondary school in England, 2004-8. Nominated by UUK for The Cabinet Office Top Management Programme, Peter is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the Chartered Management Institute.  

A Fellow, Key Associate and Advisory Board member of The Leadership Foundation for HE, Peter is a national lead for the LFHE and the HE Academy on academic leadership, change management, equality and diversity and innovation in the curriculum and student support, derivative of his international best-selling guide: The HE Manager’s Handbook: Effective Leadership and Management in Universities and Colleges (Routledge, 2004, 2010).  
 
He is currently also the UK editor, author and collaborator for the Epigeum (Imperial College, London) project to pioneer the first world-class, on-line programme with global reach on University Leadership and Management.
