Malcolm Gillies, Vice-Chancellor

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Malcolm Gillies PhD, DMus, FAHA

Professor Malcolm Gillies is the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of London Metropolitan University.  He was previously Vice-Chancellor of City University London and a Vice-President of the Australian National University.  He holds doctoral degrees from the Universities of London and Melbourne, and was during 1983-5 an Hungarian Government Scholar in Budapest.

Malcolm is a passionate advocate for higher education, especially in breadth of access, focus of curriculum, and impact of research.   During 1998-2001 he was President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and later inaugural President of the Council of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.   In 2005-6 he chaired an influential Australian study of research impact in non-science fields.  During 2008-11 he was the Champion for school-university links in London.

A musician and linguist by education, Malcolm has published a dozen books and over one hundred major articles, chapters, and reviews.  His Self-Portrait of Percy Grainger (with David Pear and Mark Carroll) gained an award for scholarly excellence from the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers in 2007.  Since 1997 he has been editor of the Oxford University Press series Studies in Musical Genesis, Structure and Interpretation. During 2011 Malcolm has curated the Bartók: Infernal Dance concert series of the Philharmonia Orchestra, London.

Malcolm is currently Chair of the advocacy body for London's universities, London Higher, and a member of the Executive Board of Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands. In his spare time he loves to swim and to attend the theatre.
