Roles and responsibilities

Each department is responsible for their own website and for keeping it up-to-date through nominated web content providers (CPs). The Head of Department (HoD) is responsible for nominating staff in their department to act as CPs. A department can have as many CPs as necessary.

If you would like to be involved in the development of your department's website, please let your HoD know. HoD's will need to inform the Web Team of their nominations before staff can be set up with an account on the University website.

Content Providers

The main web content provider has overall responsibility for maintaining their departments website and for co-ordinating the activities of other CPs in that department. CPs will be expected to:

  • Ensure that any content published by their department adheres to University and departmental policies in terms of quality, accuracy, timeliness, conformance to housestyle, and that legal requirements (included in the Universitys policies) are met
  • Act as the first point of contact with the University's Web Support contacts
  • Liaise with colleagues to provide coherent and relevant information presented in a way that is as friendly and accessible to the target audience as possible
  • Ensure that changes to content within their area do not introduce inconsistencies, inaccuracies or other such problems to other web content providers or to other parts of the Universitys website
  • Be empowered to authorise publication of pages or to remove content from pages covered by their area of responsibility
  • Develop new content and create sections and pages within their departments website

What skills does a CP need to maintain their department's webpages?

The University website has been implemented using a content management system called Shado. It is hoped that staff will find it a lot easier to update and maintain their own webpages using Shado as it does away with HTML, Dreamweaver templates and FTP, and allows staff to simply add content through their web browser (Internet Explorer 5.5 or above). Much of Shado's core functionality is similar to that of a word processor, such as Word. Shado training is provided by Human Resources.
