Why scan material for Weblearn

Scanning an important article or book chapter for Weblearn makes it available to more students and for longer hours than if it is just available in paper in the library.

Copyright issues

The University has signed the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Copying and Scanning Licence, giving us the right to scan parts of documents and put them in Weblearn, under certain conditions.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the material available through your Weblearn module is legal.

Electronic Resources

The CLA Licence does not cover items which are electronically available and subscribed to by the university. Articles which are available through databases or e-books cannot be put in Weblearn.
You can put a link to the database in your module.

Who pays for the study packs?

Practice varies between departments.

Some departments pay for the cost of production and lecturers distribute the packs to their students.

Alternatively the cost of production can be passed on to students at a price which covers reprographic and binding costs and a reasonable administrative charge, and the packs may be sold by Departmental offices, the University bookshop or the Student Union shops.

What can your Academic Liaison Librarian do to help?

Academic Liaison Librarians can advise on:

  • The choice of items from reading lists to comply with copyright requirements.
  • Whether items are covered by the licence.
  • Whether journal articles are available online.
  • Information and getting assistance with the creation of study packs
