Using Databases

To find just a few full-text articles, use PsycARTICLES or one of the other full-text databases.
For a more detailed search use PsycINFO and some of the other indexing/abstracting databases.

In instances when there’s no link to full-text showing, please go to the Library Catalogue and search for the journal title (not the article title) to see if we have it through another source.

Psychology Databases A-Z
  • AuthorMapper
    AuthorMapper is a free online tool designed to discern trends and patterns, as well as subject experts, within scientific research. Includes full-text articles.

  • Business Source Complete
    Major international database for business and management covering c. 3,300 electronic journals (most full-text) from 1965 onwards. Good for occupational psychology subjects.

  • The Cochrane Library
    Covers Health Psychology and other medicine-related issues. Available free of charge nationally. See their online Search Manual for details of the different databases, which sections are most appropriate for your search (e.g. Systematic Reviews). Includes some full-text.

  • Communication & Mass Media Complete
    Indexes and provides abstracts for articles from over 400 journals in the field of communications and mass media. Also includes links to full text for many journal articles. Good for psychology in relation to language, learning, advertising and marketing, and related fields.

  • Directory of Open Access Journals
    Freely available full-text online journals from all disciplines. Searchable and browsable.

  • E-Journal Service (EJS)
    Useful for most areas of psychology. EJS has thousands of e-journals containing millions of articles and the full-text of many of our journal subscriptions.

  • Emerald Management eJournals
    Covers mainly business and management titles but has some journals relating to psychology. Good for Occupational Psychology and Business case studies. Some full-text.

  • HighWire Press - Stanford University
    HighWire Press is a division of the Stanford University Libraries and hosts articles in the life sciences (including coverage of psychology and psychiatry). Some full-text freely available.

  • IngentaConnect Complete
    Multi-disciplinary database containing the full-text articles of many of our journal subscriptions.

  • International Bibliography of Theatre & Dance
    Useful for arts psychotherapy. Covers journal articles, books, and dissertation abstracts on all aspects of theatre and performance in 126 countries. Some full-text.

  • JSTOR
    Full-text journal archive database. Slight US bias but useful for ethics, therapies and cultural backgrounds. Generally does not include articles published in the last 3-5 years.

  • Nexis UK
    Contains full-text articles from British and international newspapers and news magazines.

  • PsycARTICLES
    PsycARTICLES is a full-text database covering 66 journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe Publishing Group, going back as far as 1894.

  • PsycINFO
    Compiled and produced by the American Psychological Association, this database covers journal articles and book chapters from 1887 to the present day from a wide range of publications. All entries include abstracts. Limited full-text is available.

  • PubMed
    Publicly available medical database from the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Abstracts only, but links provided to free versions of the full-text articles where available.

  • Science Direct
    Major journals database with a scientific emphasis (though coverage is wider than the title suggests). Hosts several hundred full-text titles.

  • Social Care Online
    Useful for Counselling and Health Psychology. A database of the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) providing abstracts of social work and social care literature. Contains over 50,000 abstracts of books, central and local government reports, research papers, and publications of voluntary organisations, and articles from a wide range of journal titles - academic, research, practice and news-orientated. Covers UK, North American and other English-language resources. Updated weekly.

  • SPORT discus
    Covers all aspects of sport including sport and exercise psychology.

  • SwetsWise
    This database is similar to IngentaConnect but has slightly different coverage. Gives full-text of articles from our journal subscriptions, plus bibliographic details of non-subscribed titles.

  • Westlaw UK
    Useful for forensic and occupational psychology students and anyone else interested in the legal ramifications of a particular issue. A comprehensive, authoritative online legal information service. Includes case law back to 1865, legislation and journal archives. The Legal Journals Index covers articles from over 800 UK and European legal journals. Many full-text articles.

  • Wiley-Blackwell Science, Technology and Medicine Collection
    Searchable and browsable collections, including psychology, with some full-text.

  • ZETOC
    Indexes approximately 20,000 current journals and 16,000 conference proceedings published each year. Covers 1993 onwards and is updated daily by the British Library. You can also set up a personal profile within Zetoc Alert, a current awareness service which will email you any new articles which match your pre-defined search criteria.
