Abstracts and Indexes

Indexes - to help you find book references and periodical articles. These databases index most of the journals in the world on the subject; the University only subscribes to a proportion of these. So what you find may not be kept in the Learning Centre. In this case, ask for an Interlibrary loan or, better still, go the British Film Institute Library.

  • Art Abstracts
Although primarily an Art database it does index 18 of the main academic film journals in the world. It comprises the bibliographic contents of 280 leading Art journals, museum bulletins and yearbooks. Coverage is from 1984 as an index, with added abstracts from 1994 to the present. It is updated monthly. Subject coverage spans all aspects of art, from visual to performing arts, and ranges from archaeology to television and video.
  • MLA International Bibliography Provides references on literature, language, film and theatre. Full references are given to articles in over 3,500 journals; to books and to book chapters, and to theses. Can be used from inside and outside the University.

Other datasets/indexes can be found on the Electronic Information Resources page.

Newspapers are good sources for reviews. Links to backfiles of the Broadsheet newspapers are available under Newspapers and Current Affairs on the library web site.
