The library subscribes to a number of electronic resources that may be useful for students of Nursing and Prescribing. These include:
- Academic Search Complete
Academic Search Complete is a very large multidisciplinary database containing scholarly journals, newspapers and popular magazines. The database indexes over 8,400 journal titles, including more than 4,700 full-text. Subjects covered include health, biology, chemistry, education, humanities, law, physics, psychology, sociology, and many other disciplines.
- Allied & Complementary Medicines (AMED)
AMED is a bibliographic database containing references and abstracts of journal papers from 1985 to the present. AMED is multidisciplinary and international in scope, and includes over 152,000 citations covering physiotherapy and manual therapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, complementary medicine and other professional subjects allied to medicine. Around 12,000 citations are added annually.
- British Nursing Index
British Nursing Index is a nursing and midwifery database, covering over 220 UK journals and other English language titles. A significant feature is the inclusion of articles relevant to nurses and midwives from medical journals and those for healthcare management and professions allied to medicine. The database has a “Linked full text” feature which enables users to access the full-text of articles from journals to which the library subscribes.
- The Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world’s best medical research studies, and are recognised as the gold standard in evidence-based health care.

- IBSS (International Bibliography of the Social Sciences)
This is one of the largest and most comprehensive social science databases in the world with access to over 2 million records. Current data is taken from over 2800 international social science journals and around 7000 books per year. Abstracts are available for up to 60% of the journals covered.
- Medline
MEDLINE is a bibliographic database containing references to and abstracts of journal articles from 1950 to the present, with some older material. MEDLINE is multi-disciplinary and international in scope, and includes over 16 million references covering all aspects of the life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. About 700,000 citations are currently added to the database each year. MEDLINE is the largest component of PubMed, the freely accessible online database of biomedical journal citations and abstracts created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. On-Campus only: To access the full text of a cited journal paper, go direct to the Linked Full Text of the paper if a link is available from the database record. If no Linked Full Text is available from the MEDLINE database record, and for off-campus access, search for the journal title on the Library Catalogue, and browse through to the referenced article.
- PsycARTICLES
PsycARTICLES is a full-text database covering 66 journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe Publishing Group, going back as far as 1894.
- PsycINFO
The database of the American Psychological Association. It covers journal articles and book chapters from 1887 to the present day. All entries include detailed summaries, as well as full details of contributing authors. Note: to trace references from Dissertation Abstracts you should contact the institution where the research was conducted.
- Science Direct
ScienceDirect gives access to over 1500 scientific, technical & medical peer-reviewed journals published by Elsevier Science, including the full-text of more than 2 million scientific journal articles.
- Social Science Citation Index
This is part of ISI Web of Knowledge and is a multidisciplinary database, with searchable author abstracts, covering journal literature of the social sciences. It indexes more than 1,725 journals spanning 50 disciplines, as well as covering individually selected relevant items from over 3,300 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals.
- Social Care Online
This database is provided by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and provides abstracts of social work and social care and health literature. The database contains over 50,000 abstracts of books, central and local government reports, research papers, and publications of voluntary organisations. It also contains articles from a wide range of journal titles - academic, research, practice and news-orientated. The database covers UK, North American and other English-language resources. It is updated weekly. This resource is freely available online here.
