Architecture and Spatial Design Databases

The university library subscribes to a wide range of databases that provide access to subject information. You can access ANY database, not just those about architecture and spatial design. You can search for information and usually access full text journal articles online.

You can find databases you can access by using your university login by going to the catalogue and putting in the name of the database and limiting to electronic resources.

Some useful databases for architecture and spatial design are:

    Art Full Text is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles from periodicals published throughout the world. Full-text coverage for selected periodicals is also included. Periodical coverage includes English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins, as well as periodicals published in French, Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish. In addition to articles, Art Full Text indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals. Indexing coverage begins 1984; abstracting coverage begins with January 1994. The abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source articles. Full-text coverage begins in 1997.

  • Bridgeman Library
    The image database of the Bridgeman Art Library. It provides access to images from diverse cultures worldwide, spanning the prehistoric era to the presentBridgeman Education gives you access to the visual culture of every civilization from Mesopotamia to Mesoamerica and every period from prehistoric times to the present. The content from our museums, galleries, historic houses, private collections, photographers and artists extends far beyond European and Western art to Asia and the Middle east, the African and Australasian continents, the Americas and even the Arctic.

  • Construction Information Service
    Access to British Standards, legislation and other guidance information related to construction, health and safety and pharmaceuticals, in addition to product catalogues covering the construction, engineering, process and electronics industries and National Building Specification (NBS) Building Regulations approved documents. Also includes access to Architects Journal (AJ), Steel Construction Institute and Concrete Society.

  • DAAI : Design and Applied Arts Index
    International index covering all areas of design and craft. Contains over 100,000 references from more than 450 design and craft journals, with 10-15,000 references added annually. Also includes data on over 40,000 designers, studios, workshops, firms etc. Also included are 4 supplementary directories on education, organisations, archives and periodicals.

  • Digimap
    A database of ordnance survey maps of the United Kingdom. You need to register and then re-register every year. You do this via the library catalogue. Allow up to two days for registration to complete.

  • Ebsco's Greenfile
    Covers all aspects of human impact to the environment, including content on architecture and low energy design, conservation, global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 384,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,700 records.

  • JSTOR
    Access to journal articles (mainly historic) on a wide range of subjects including architecture.

    Includes Grove art online, Oxford companion to Western art, Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, Concise Oxford dictionary of art terms.
    Contains articles on every aspects of the visual arts including architecture, from prehistory to the present day. Extensive image links.

  • Planning Architecture and Design Database Ireland (paddi)
    Paddi is a bibliographic database which aims to provide wide access to information on all aspects of the built environment and environmental planning in Ireland, north and south. Indexing of material began in 1980; indexed material includes items published from c 1865 to the present, but the majority of items date from the mid 20th century onwards; the time period covered is 12th century to the present.

  • RIBA library catalogue
    Searchable database containing bibliographic information with abstracts from the British Architectural Library Index at RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). Includes books, slides, films and exhibition catalogues as well as journal articles. Contains a bibliographic database of architects.

    Does not provide full text online directly. You may need to check the university catalogue to check availability and access full text.

  • WGSN
    WSGN an online news and information and fashion images service for the fashion and style industries including fashion forecasting, design, company profiles and news items on e-commerce, finance, advertising and marketing.

  • ZETOC
    Provides access to the British Library Electronic Table of Contents. Details of 20,000 caurrent journals and 16,000 conference proceedings. Covers many subjects including architecture.
