Below are a selection of databases relevant to American Studies.

Full Text Electronic Sources

  • Academic Search Complete
    A very large, multidisciplinary database, which includes scholarly journals as well as newspapers and popular magazines. Indexes well over 8,000 journal titles, including more than 4,700 full text journals. Covers area studies, arts, creative writing, education, film, history, humanities, journalism, language and linguistics, literature, performing arts, philosophy, sociology, and many other disciplines.

  • Art Full Text
    Although primarily an Art database it does include the full text of 17 academic film journals. It comprises the bibliographic contents of 280 leading Art journals, museum bulletins and yearbooks. Coverage is from 1984 as an index, with added abstracts from 1994 to the present. It is updated monthly. Subject coverage spans all aspects of art, from visual to performing arts, and ranges from archaeology to television and video.

  • Communication and Mass Media Complete
    This database indexes and provides abstracts for articles from over 400 journals in the field of communications and mass media, including film, radio, television and journalism. Also includes links to full text for many journal articles. Many journals are covered from their first issues to the present.

  • Historical Abstracts
    Covers history of all regions of the world, excluding North America, from 1450 to the present day.

  • Humanities International Complete
    The database indexes more than 2000 journals and includes full text for 670 journals. Humanities International Complete is an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and educators interested in all aspects of the humanities, with worldwide content pertaining to literary, scholarly and creative thought.

  • IIPA - International Index to the Performing Arts Full Text
    This service indexes the main film journals and has an extensive backfile; abstracts are included from 1998. Some journals are available in full text.

  • International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS)
    One of the largest and most comprehensive social science databases in the world, with very good coverage of history.

  • JSTOR
    Contains back issues of many important history journals. For most, however, access stops three years ago.

  • Sage Journals Online
    Contains full-text articles of the most popular peer-reviewed journals in Communication Studies, Management & Organization Studies, Materials Science, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, and Urban Studies & Planning. Access is to subscribed journals only, get a list by clicking on “SAGE journals available to me”. Can also read summaries to journal articles we don’t subscribe to or which might be available via other databases.

  • Zetoc
    The British Library's Electronic Table of Contents, covering journals and conference proceedings.
