Short Loan Collections

You can borrow up to 4 items from the short loan collections at any one time.
Each site has a Short Loan collection and there are differences in the way the collections are organised at each site library.

At Calcutta House the Short Loan Collection is on the 3rd floor in the Journals Room. Items may be used in the library or issued to you to take home.

In Moorgate the Short Loan Collections is beside the Information Desk and items may be used within the library or issued to you to take home.

At Holloway Road the Short Loan Collection is located in a room opposite the Information Desk. Counter films/DVDs are located in the same area. Most items are issued using the self service machine in the room. Reference material can only be issued from the Information desk.

At Commercial Road the short loan collection is on the 2nd floor near the Information desk and the Library entrance.

At Ladbroke House the Short Loan Collection is kept behind the Information Desk and all items have to be issued to you.

Short Loan items must be returned to the site from which they were borrowed.

Loan Periods

Normally short loan items are issued for 3 hours. After 15 minutes, your booking will elapse if requested by another reader. If another student already has the item booked for a time before the end of the 3 hours your loan period will be shortened.

After 5 PM short loan items are issued overnight and are due back the following day at 10.30am. On Fridays from 5 PM they are issued for the weekend and are due back the following Monday at 10.30am.

Fines
Short loan items are in heavy demand and can be booked by other students. Because of the inconvenience caused by late return a fine of 50p per hour (or part of an hour) is charged for each overdue item.

Renewals
Most short loan items can only be renewed at the Information Desk from which they were borrowed. Holloway Road library is an exception. Items must be returned first using the self service machine in the short loan area and then re-issued if required again. Items booked by another borrower cannot be renewed. Short Loans cannot be renewed by telephone or online.

Offprints
What are Offprints?
Offprints are photocopies of journal articles, chapters from books and 'missing pages' from items in the Library. Most Offprints are recommended reading for modules and courses, and these are likely to be specified in the reading list in your module handbook.

Finding and Borrowing Offprints
Look them up in the Library catalogue using the Advanced Keyword option, then choose OFFPRINT from the ‘Material Type’ drop-down box. Type in the author’s name and/or the article or chapter title.

You can tell something is an Offprint by looking at its location. If, for example, it says ‘Calcutta House Offprints’ or ‘Holloway Road Offprints’ then you need to go to the counter in that library to ask for it.

You can borrow up to four Offprints at a time as part of the Short Loan entitlement. Most Offprints are reference only and cannot be taken out of the library. However, at Calcutta House Library, Offprints can be borrowed in the same way as Short Loan items.
