Fines: how much they are, and how not to incur them

--

Are fines charged?
Fines are charged for the late return of one week loan and short loan items. All items issued on your card are your responsibility. All students pay the same fines, payable by cash or cheque only.

Note - It is your responsibility to know when your loans are due for return.

How can I avoid paying fines?
  • Check your library record regularly. You should renew your loans at least one day before they are due back.

  • Check your email regularly. A courtesy reminder will be sent to your LondonMet email address (or another preferred email address if you have notified library staff of this) two days before your books are due back. Failure to receive the reminder does not mean that a fine can be waived.

  • You will not be able to renew any item that has been reserved by another borrower.

  • You will not be able to renew any item using self-service machines, the Library catalogue if it is more than seven days overdue. In this case contact library staff as soon as possible.

  • You should also contact library staff immediately to report a lost or stolen library card, for any queries about your loans or fines, or for advice in exceptional circumstances.

Why has my library record been blocked

Your library account is blocked:

  • If you have over £40 in outstanding library fines or charges

  • If you have already been sent two overdue reminder notices for an item

  • If you have an item which has been reserved by another borrower, and which is already overdue

  • If you owe any outstanding charges at the beginning of each semester

When your library account has been blocked you will not be able to borrow or renew any library items, collect any reserved items, or use the Interlibrary loan service.

What can I do if my library loans are lost or stolen?

We will accept a replacement copy of lost or stolen items, provided the appropriate subject librarian approves this. Please make sure you contact your subject librarian before buying books. Click here for a list of subject librarians.

  • The replacement copy must be the same title as the one on your loan record.

  • It must be a new copy.

  • We only accept the latest edition.

If you are not able to provide a replacement copy you will be charged for the library to obtain one. The standard replacement charge is £40.00 per item. When paying this charge, please keep your receipt safe. If you find the lost item(s) within 3 months, we can refund the payment, less an administrative charge of £10.00 per item.
