Browsing the collection/ How the Collection is arranged Samples are kept on the display boards on the wall, in the display cabinet, on hanging racks and in drawers. The display boards are organised by type of material, e.g. wood, glass and ceramics, plastics etc. Look through the drawers and on the display boards to see what inspires you. For more information about the samples, look at the label. This tells you:
- The date the sample was added to the collection
- The name of the material
- The name of the company that made it
- Their web-address
If we have a brochure or catalogue containing information about the sample, it will say so on the label – there will be a code, made up of letters or numbers or both, telling you where the information is shelved. Make a note of this, together with the company’s name, as some of the folders containing company literature contain information from several different companies. How to find samples of a particular product or material If you know what type of material you want to use for your design project, and would like to see some samples of it, you will need to use the Subject Index. This is in a ring-binder kept on the tables in the Materials and Products area. The index is arranged in alphabetical order, with the name of the product or material on the left, and the code (made up of letters, numbers or both) telling you where the samples are kept. Look in the drawers and on the display boards. It is also worth looking at some of the larger catalogues shelved at that code as these often contain samples too. |
