Too Hot or too Cold?
London Metropolitan University has a Space Temperature Policy which states the heating andcooling parameters for the university.
Too Hot?
Try to avoid leaving equipment on overnight else as computers, photocopiers etc emit heat and this will create heat build up overnight.
Avoid the use of artificial lights. Lighting emits more energy as heat than light, if possible use natural light and turn off artificial lights.
Close blinds/curtains at when you leave to stop the sunshine from warming up a room first thing.
Open windows to create air flow to cool down areas.
Too Cold?
Close curtains/blinds when you leave to keep the heat in.
Close the windows when the room is being heated, heating London is expensive. If the room gets too hot during the heating season turn down the thermostat slightly rather than open the window.
The heating in the buildings is controlled centrally so using portable electric heaters is not only adding to our carbon footprint as it has twice the carbon dioxide emissions of gas central heating but can result in more temperature control problems.
If your radiator has a Thermostatic Radiator Valve as shown below, this can be adjusted to make the room more comfortable.
Generally the best TRV setting for offices is 3. The temperatures of the settings are:
